One of the most magical experiences anyone can have in life is diving with manta rays.
There are so few places on earth where it is possible to encounter these truly majestic and peaceful creatures, and thankfully, Bali is one of them.

The waters surrounding Bali and the outlying islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan are some of the most biodiverse in the world.
Did you know that the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area is protected under the same environmental laws as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia?
Home to critically endangered species and some of the most fragile coral reefs known to humankind, the waters off the coast of Bali have so much for tourists to marvel at.
Just last year, the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area was officially listed as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) by the International Maritime Organization, which is part of the United Nations.
The announcement was described by local NGO, the Coral Triangle Center, as “a monumental achievement after years of dedicated conservation work within the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA) – made possible with the unwavering support of CTC and passionate environmental advocates.”
Whether a marine enthusiast or not, encountering manta rays in the wild is nothing shy of awe-inspiring. Taking the time to organise a day trip to swim with the manta rays while on vacation in Bali has to be a priority for all holidaymakers seeking some seriously memorable adventures on their trip.
Often referred to as gentle giants, and with good reason, manta rays have a wingspan of up to 5m and glide seemingly effortlessly through the water. What makes diving with manta rays off Nusa Penida so special is that the resident population is present year-round.
While it is certainly more visible and many feel safer to conduct trips during the dry season, as opposed to the monsoon season, it is possible to encounter these magical manta rays year-round. The cleaning sites, where the manta rays congregate, are generally busiest in May.
From late June through to October, it is also possible to see the migratory and elusive Mola Mola fish, also known as sunfish, which tend to visit the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area when the waters are cooler.
As their names suggest, Manta Point and Manta Bay are the best places to see manta rays off Nusa Penida. These two sites are where almost all dive and snorkelling tour providers operate their activities.
It must be noted, however, that tourists are highly encouraged to do their own research before booking a tour to ensure that they are happy with the provider they choose.

Since this is such a popular activity involving wildlife, the utmost attention must be given to facilitating the welfare and well-being of these wild animals.
Tourists must obey the rules and remain a safe 10m distance from the manta rays in the water, give right of way to the manta rays in the water, never touch the manta rays, and swim slowly so as not to disturb the water too much.

While it is possible to encounter the manta rays while snorkelling, for the best encounters, scuba diving is highly advised.
Manta rays often swim close to the surface of the water, making them ideal for snorkellers. However, since the average depth at spots like Manta Point is 10-15m, it is best experienced through diving.

For those who already hold a PADI Open Water qualification and a valid certification, it is possible to book a diving experience directly with one of the many dive schools on the main island of Bali, as well as on Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.
For those yet to attain a PADI certification, almost all of these same dive tour providers are also dive schools where students can complete their dive qualifications and head out to many of Bali’s quieter dive sites, too.
