The arrival of Lebaran: Family, Food, and Forgiveness in Indonesia

PT B.A.L.I would like to wish Selamat Idul Fitri to all !

For the past month, Muslims around the world have been fasting from sunrise to sunset for Ramadan, marking the holy month through reflection on their faith.

As this year's Ramadan comes to a close, a festive period called Eid al-Fitr begins and daytime meals are back on the table.

Eid al-Fitr is known as the festival of the breaking of the fast as it comes right after the Holy Month of Ramadan.

For the whole month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food and drink.

The month is also about reflection and doing good deeds.

Eid al-Fitr traditions can vary depending on where worshippers are from, especially when it comes to what is eaten. Here in Indonesia it varies wildy with homecooked meals from local cultures, some prominent foods being "ketupat" and "opor ayam". However no matter where you are in Indonesia, during Eid the air carries the aroma of delicious foods all day long.

Eid al-Fitr usually lasts three days but in some countries and cultures it can be extended for an entire month!

Before morning prayers, Muslims are also obligated to pay Zakat al-Fitr, which is a small donation given to the poor or those in need. The mandatory donation often equals the cost of one meal or 1 kilogram of rice and wheat, so this differs between countries and regions. That money goes to the poor and needy, including widows, orphans, refugees and people experiencing homelessness.

Muslims usually wear their nicest clothes to present their best self to Allah and open their homes, which are often decorated to visits from families and friends, many who have partaken in "mudik" (the annual homecoming to ones hometown or village, often times from other islands).

"Halal Bihalal" is another custom, which includes asking forgiveness from friends and family as well as "Tunjangan Hari Raya" or holiday bonuses presented by elders to younger family members.

Idul Fitri in Indonesia is a beautiful blend of religious observance and cultural traditions, creating a truly special and memorable celebration. It's a time for families to come together, for forgiveness to be granted, and for the spirit of community to shine brightly.

May the blessings of Allah light up your path and lead you to happiness, success, and prosperity. Eid Mubarak 2025!
