TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto announced that the Indonesian government is prepared to accept injured and orphaned Palestinian children affected by the Israeli attacks in Gaza.
He made the statement before embarking on a state tour to Turkey and Middle Eastern countries at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on April 9, 2025.
Prabowo added that he has directed Foreign Minister Sugiono to coordinate with the Palestinian government on establishing an evacuation mechanism for the victims.
"We are ready to evacuate those who are wounded, those who are traumatized, and orphaned children. They want to be evacuated to Indonesia, and we are ready to send planes to transport them," said Prabowo.
The government estimates that the first wave of evacuations will involve around a thousand people.
However, Prabowo stipulated that this evacuation must be approved by all parties and the victims will only be temporarily placed in Indonesia until they recover.
"If the situation in Gaza allows, they must return to their original areas," Prabowo said.
Prabowo stated that in order to realize the evacuation assistance, the government needs to consult with leaders in the Middle East region, including how Indonesia can help resolve the conflict in Gaza.
"This is something complex, not easy, but the commitment of the Republic of Indonesia to support the safety of the Palestinian people, to support the independence of Palestine, I think urges the Indonesian government to play a more active role," he said.
Since the time of President Joko Widodo, Prabowo said, Indonesia has consistently sent humanitarian aid to Gaza, including sending medical teams that work in dangerous conditions.
Prabowo admitted that Indonesia has received many requests to be more active in resolving conflicts in the Middle East region, especially the Gaza conflict.
"Because there are many requests for Indonesia to play a more active role in supporting the search for a solution to the conflict in Gaza and in the Middle East as a whole," said Prabowo.
Although Indonesia is located far from the center of the conflict, Prabowo reminded that Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population and is a non-aligned country. According to him, Indonesia's non-aligned and active non-aligned political stance is considered acceptable by the warring parties.
"That is why I convey that Indonesia is ready if requested by all parties involved to play a role. We are ready to act in accordance with Indonesia's capacity and ability," said Prabowo.
Prabowo is scheduled to visit five countries from April 9 to 15, 2025, including the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan. He stated that, in addition to addressing current geopolitical and economic developments, his agenda will include discussions on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the situation in Gaza.
