Bali to Cairo: A Family Adventure
Long-time Bali residents Lawrence, a Canadian seasoned developer, and his charming wife Azizah, a licensed Notary, along with their two sons—Darius, 16, and Xander, 20—embarked on a school holiday adventure two weeks ago. This trip held special significance, as it might be the family’s last overseas vacation together before Xander ventures into adulthood.
Taking advantage of exceptionally low airfares, Lawrence booked tickets from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Cairo, Egypt, months in advance on Etihad Airlines.
Their journey began with a quick flight from Bali to Kuala Lumpur, choosing AirAsia for its dependable service on early morning flights—less crowded and more relaxed.
Preparing for the Journey
Packing for a family of four requires strategic planning.
Lawrence recommends purchasing a small luggage scale and weighing every bag so you have no surprises at check in and embarrass yourself as you try to rearrange your bags in front of waiting lines
Lawrence and Azizah opted for two large suitcases (each pre-packed with 20 kg, leaving room for souvenirs) and four carry-ons loaded with essentials: laptops, chargers, and an overnight change of clothes for their stop in Kuala Lumpur.
To ease the travel experience, they secured priority boarding and pre-booked baggage allowances—small upgrades that made a big difference.
In Kuala Lumpur, they stayed at the Mövenpick Hotel near the airport, enjoying a complimentary upgrade thanks to their connections in the hospitality industry.
After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, they were ready to check in for their Etihad Airways flight.
For the long-haul journey, Lawrence once again splurged on priority seats, landing the coveted bulkhead rows with ample legroom—practically first-class in economy!

The flight was smooth, with a quick layover in Doha, allowing time to explore the stunning Hamad International Airport before continuing to Cairo.
Cross Africa off the buckle list
As the plane first crossed the Egptian Border Lawrence peered down from the plane and thought "my first time in Africa " Only one more continent to go Antarticia.

Arrival in Cairo
Landing in Cairo is like stepping back in time.
The airport feels decades behind the times, and navigating the taxi system for four adults two large check in bags and four carry on's can be challenging.
After carefully vetting a taxi driver, the family negotiated a $30 fare to their home exchange apartment in and upscale neighborhood.
Their temporary home was a spacious 300 M2 recently totally renovated, modern three-bedroom apartment with all the comforts of home in Maadi , including Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and even a dishwasher.
Thanks to Lawrence’s 11 years of experience with home exchanges, they secured this accommodation at zero cost by using points accumulated from his Bali home exchange properties—an invaluable perk when traveling with a family.
Settling Into Cairo
The hustle and bustle of Cairo is unmistakable. Honking horns are a constant background noise, even in high-end neighborhoods, and stray dogs often stage their “morning rallies.”
First Stop: The Nile
Their first day began with a visit to the iconic Nile River, the world’s longest and most storied waterway.
Over the coming days, they planned to visit the Giza Pyramids, the renowned Egyptian Museum, and the highly anticipated brand new Grand Egyptian Museum.
A trip to Alexandria, the historic city of Cleopatra and Alexander the Great, was also on the itinerary.
