The tourism sector in Indonesia continued to boom, with over 1.39 million foreign tourist arrivals in September 2025, up 9.04% on the year. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana revealed the growth of foreign arrivals, reflecting the country’s increasing appeal to international travelers. The cumulative foreign arrivals from January to September 2025 reached 11.43 million, a remarkable 10.22% more compared with the previous year, and further strengthened Indonesia’s recovery in the global tourism market.
Minister Wardhana expressed confidence that foreign tourist arrivals would reach more than 14 to 15 million at the end of 2025, in line with the updated Government Work Plan set by the government and reflecting a very positive outlook for Indonesia’s tourism sector. This strong growth is part of Indonesia’s recovery from the global pandemic and its rebuilding to become one of the best tourist destinations in Southeast Asia.
ASEAN Tourists Lead the Charge with 35.22% of Total Arrivals
A significant portion of the increase in foreign arrivals comes from ASEAN countries, which accounted for 35.22% of all foreign tourists in September 2025. This trend reflects Indonesia’s strong ties with neighboring Southeast Asian nations, many of whom enjoy visa-free or simplified entry arrangements. Additionally, other Asian markets made up 27.57% of the total arrivals, demonstrating the country’s broad appeal across Asia.
The growing interest from ASEAN tourists is indicative of stronger regional travel flows, as more people from neighboring countries opt for short-haul vacations to Indonesia’s beaches, cultural heritage sites, and urban centers. As the country continues to develop its tourism infrastructure and marketing efforts, these regional markets are expected to remain strong contributors to overall foreign tourism growth.
Domestic Tourism Surge with 94.36 Million Trips in September 2025
In addition to foreign tourism, Indonesia has seen impressive growth in domestic tourism. September 2025 saw 94.36 million domestic trips, reflecting a 13.19% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The rise in domestic tourism mirrors the growing popularity of local travel experiences as Indonesians explore their own country. This growth in domestic tourism also plays a crucial role in sustaining the local economy, especially in tourism-heavy areas like Bali, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta.
From January to September 2025, 901.9 million domestic trips were recorded, contributing to Indonesia’s positive net foreign exchange. This robust performance in domestic tourism underscores the resilience of the local market, especially as Indonesians take advantage of more affordable travel options amid rising global inflation. Domestic tourism has become a cornerstone of the country’s tourism recovery, supporting local businesses and generating significant revenue.
Indonesia’s Tourism Sector Supports Economic Growth
The growth in tourism, both foreign and domestic, has had a significant impact on Indonesia’s economic performance. Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa noted that tourism contributed 3.96% to Indonesia’s Q3 GDP. This contribution is vital as Indonesia targets 5.04% economic growth for 2025. The tourism sector’s performance not only supports the economy but also creates new jobs, boosts local businesses, and contributes to a positive trade balance.
To maintain the growth momentum and encourage further travel, the Indonesian government has introduced holiday travel discounts for air, land, sea, and ferry transport. These discounts, effective from mid-December to early January, are expected to stimulate tourism activity during the peak holiday season, ensuring that both foreign visitors and domestic travelers have access to affordable transportation options. The government’s strategic move to offer discounts is aimed at supporting the tourism sector during the high season and ensuring a steady flow of visitors throughout the year.
Tourism Growth Strategies and the Path Forward
As Indonesia approaches the end of 2025, the country remains focused on expanding its tourism offerings to meet the growing demand. Sustainable tourism practices are likely to play a key role in future growth, with continued emphasis on preserving natural landscapes and cultural heritage. Efforts to promote eco-tourism, community-based tourism, and unique cultural experiences will enhance Indonesia’s appeal, especially to international tourists seeking authentic travel experiences.
Additionally, Indonesia’s tourism authorities are likely to continue strengthening regional partnerships and targeting key international markets. As more countries reopen for travel, Indonesia’s ability to attract tourists from Europe, Australia, and other parts of Asia will be crucial in sustaining growth and diversifying the tourist base.
New Opportunities for Growth: Expanding Tourism to Lesser-Known Destinations
Looking beyond traditional hotspots like Bali and Jakarta, Indonesia is increasingly focusing on promoting lesser-known destinations across the archipelago. The country’s rich diversity of landscapes, from mountain ranges to beach resorts and historical towns, presents a wealth of opportunities for niche tourism. Areas like Lombok, Flores, and Sumatra are gaining attention from travelers seeking more authentic and off-the-beaten-path experiences.
By promoting these lesser-explored regions, Indonesia can spread the benefits of tourism more evenly across the country, alleviating the pressure on heavily visited destinations while boosting the economies of smaller towns and provinces. This focus on diverse tourism offerings also positions Indonesia to cater to emerging trends such as adventure tourism, wellness tourism, and eco-friendly travel.
Future Growth: A Sustainable Tourism Model for Indonesia
As Indonesia looks to the future, sustainability in tourism will be a central focus. With increasing awareness of environmental issues and the negative impact of over-tourism on local communities and ecosystems, Indonesia is committed to developing tourism in a sustainable manner. This includes promoting eco-tourism, clean farm produce, and responsible tourism practices that minimize environmental damage and protect cultural heritage.
The government’s goal of achieving 14 to 15 million foreign arrivals by 2025 is part of a larger vision to integrate sustainability into every aspect of tourism development. From cleaner transport options to green hotel initiatives and eco-friendly tour packages, Indonesia is setting the stage for a more responsible approach to tourism that will benefit both the environment and local communities in the long term.
Indonesia Poised for Continued Tourism Success
Indonesia’s tourism sector has been very resilient in 2025, with foreign arrivals and domestic tourism showing strong growth. The growth of foreign tourist arrivals, reaching as high as 9.04% for September 2025, reflects the attractiveness of various Indonesian destinations and the efficiency of tourism recovery strategies that have so far been implemented by the country. With the government offering holiday travel discounts and continuing to make tourism one of the drivers of economic growth, Indonesia is well-positioned to surpass its goals for foreign tourist arrivals in 2025.
As tourism keeps growing as one of the pillars of the Indonesian economy, continuous and diligent efforts to promote sustainable, inclusive, and culturally enriching experiences for travelers will help Indonesia retain its position as a tourists’ dream destination in Southeast Asia and beyond. With just the right type of promotion, building needed infrastructure, and concerns for sustainability, the future of Indonesia’s tourism sector would continue to be bright.

Is Bali's Rainy Season Finally Here?

September 9th, 2025 — Bali was struck by the most severe storm I’ve witnessed in 27 years of living here, and for many residents, the worst in their lifetime.
Torrential rains flooded rivers, destroyed roads, and tragically claimed more than twenty lives across the island. In the storm’s aftermath, many residents and visitors were quick to declare, “the rainy season is here.”
However, as someone who has lived, sailed, and studied Bali’s weather patterns for nearly three decades — five of those years crossing local channels daily in the yacht charter business — I boldly stated: "it is not the start of the rainy season".
