Is Bali's Rainy Season Finally Here?

🌴 Understanding Bali’s Rainy Season: A Veteran’s Perspective

September 9th, 2025 — Bali was struck by the most severe storm I’ve witnessed in 27 years of living here — and for many residents, the worst in their lifetime.
Torrential rains flooded rivers, destroyed roads, and tragically claimed more than twenty lives across the island. In the storm’s aftermath, many residents and visitors were quick to declare, “the rainy season is here.”

However, as someone who has lived, sailed, and studied Bali’s weather patterns for nearly three decades — five of those years crossing local channels daily in the yacht charter business — I boldly stated: "it is not the start of the rainy season".

🌬️ What the Rainy Season in Bali Actually Is

According to AI and meteorological data:

“The Bali rainy season, also known as the wet or monsoon season, is the time when Bali experiences its heaviest rainfall and highest humidity due to the northwest monsoon winds.”

That last phrase — “due to the northwest monsoon winds” — is the key. The rainy season begins only when these winds shift from the east to the northwest, carrying warm, moisture-laden air across the island.

🧭 The Rhythm of the Trade Winds

Bali’s trade winds are as predictable as clockwork. They move like a clock.

January to March: Winds arrive from the northwest, bringing rain to the western and central highlands first.

April to October: The winds gradually swing eastward, ushering in Bali’s famous dry, cool, and sunny months.

By November or December: The full rainy season usually begins — often right around Christmas.

As of now, the winds are still blowing from the southeast, meaning the true rainy season is still some time away.

A fun local indicator? When kites stop flying along Bali’s east coast and begin appearing on the west, and when planes start landing in Kuta from the east instead of the west — that’s nature’s way of signaling the monsoon’s arrival.

☔ What You Can Expect During Bali’s Rainy Season

Characteristic Details: Rainfall, Intense tropical showers, usually in short bursts — often in the afternoon or evening. Rarely does it rain all day.
Temperature Warm and steady, between 24°C–33°C (75°F–91°F).
Humidity High — often above 80%, lending a lush, tropical feel.
Scenery The island turns emerald green — waterfalls swell, and rice terraces glisten.

Fewer crowds and lower prices (except during Christmas/New Year). Many luxury travelers and property scouts prefer this quieter period.
