Bali’s Visitors Can Experience Nyepi, The Hindu Day Of Silence

By Roger Sands

According to the Balinese calendar, Nyepi, a “Day of Silence,” officially falls on March 29 at 6 a.m. after the new moon and lasts for 24 hours, during which time no public activities are permitted.

Nyepi, a Balinese "Day of Silence,” is commemorated every Isakawarsa according to the Balinese calendar. A public holiday in Indonesia that celebrates the Balinese New Year, Nyepi serves as a day of silence, fasting and meditation. According to the Balinese calendar, Nyepi officially falls on Saturday, March 29 at 6 a.m. after the new moon and lasts for 24 hours until 6 a.m. on March 30. During this observance no public activities are permitted. The island comes to a standstill for 24 hours, with no lights, music or noise. Transport is halted and everyone must stay at home. It is a time for reflection, meditation and self-purification. There are four core tenets of Nyepi: No fire or light (no electricity); No work or physical activity; No travel or leaving home; No entertainment.

Bali observes Nyepi with absolute sincerity as even the island’s airport shuts down. The silence is all the more striking because it follows Pengrupukan Day, the loudest, most raucous celebration of the year. On this night, Balinese communities flood the streets creating an electrifying spectacle of noise, fire, and spiritual rituals before slipping into complete stillness at dawn. Two days before Nyepi in Bali, several traditional and religious ceremonies are performed. Among these is the Melasti ceremony, where the Balinese people carry religious symbols to the beach to purify them with holy water. This ceremony is believed to cleanse both the human body and the earth from badness and negative spirits.

This year, Nyepi coincides with Lebaran, making it an especially meaningful time for reflection and togetherness. Lebaran is the Indonesian popular name for two Islamic official holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in Indonesia, and is one of the major national holidays in the country.

For those seeking a true reset, Bali offers more than its famed beaches and bohemian retreats. Travelers who are craving slower, more intentional experiences would be well advised to include Bali and Nyepi as part of their agenda, which will give them the opportunity to connect with the stillness within.

Yet, Nyepi isn’t just about retreating into silence. It’s a cultural immersion unlike any other. Last year, Bali welcomed the world’s first museum dedicated to this phenomenon. The beautiful SAKA Museum is named after the ancient Hindu solar calendar. Inside this architecturally striking space on the grounds of AYANA Bali, visitors can explore Nyepi’s spiritual and artistic legacy through evocative Indonesian poetry, immersive documentaries and rare palm-leaf manuscripts (lontar) containing sacred wisdom. The collection includes a traditional gamelan ensemble, a 19th-century star calendar used to predict destinies and a pair of 17th-century celestial maidens intricately carved from pink volcanic tuff stone.

The museum's very name beautifully encapsulates its noble mission of bridging the rich tapestry of Bali's past, its vibrant present and the promising horizons of its future. Visitors can learn about the different rituals and traditions associated with Nyepi, as well as the deeper meaning of this important holiday.

Carefully curated by museum director Dr. Judith E. Bosnak and Balinese scholar Professor I Made Bandem, SAKA Museum offers a deeply immersive cultural experience. “Nyepi gives time for inner reflection, meditation and room to restore the balance between mighty forces of good and evil within the household, the local community and beyond,” says Bosnak.

This year, AYANA invites guests to honor Nyepi with an on-property procession, guided meditations and stargazing. SAKA Museum will host expert-led lectures, while a Lamak wish ceremony offers a meaningful way to set intentions for the year ahead. To further enrich one’s appreciation of Balinese culture, visitors can watch a series of short films, including the currently premiering film about Nyepi, in the state-of-the-art auditorium. Available in multiple languages, this is a “must see” experience.

AYANA Bali and AYANA Komodo offer exclusive retreats that feature a special two-night Nyepi packages. At AYANA Bali, guests can immerse themselves in the tranquility of Nyepi (March 28-30, 2025) with cultural experiences, healing meditation and stargazing. AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach offers an idyllic nature escape, allowing travelers to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Komodo National Park during this peaceful long weekend.

Famous for its white sand beaches, big surf, iconic temples, rice terraces and volcanoes, Bali offers visitors an experience unlike any other. Here, visitors will be greeted by warm, kind people stemming from a vibrant Hindu culture along with a laid-back vibe that permeates the island. Gorgeous scenery includes lush greenery and rain forests. The island's traditional music and dance, elaborate ceremonies and gamelan concerts can be found everywhere you go. Away from the picturesque coast, the volcanic interior is blanketed in dense forests that meander down to colonial hill towns and tiered rice terraces that wind around the hillsides. Whether you choose to visit during Nyepi or at another time of the year, you’ll be instantly swept away by this magical island paradise.
