Bali Ocean Days 2026, Establishes Indonesia as a Global Hub for Ocean Solutions and Sustainable Tourism

INDOBALINEWS – The third edition of Bali Ocean Days (BOD) 2026, held at InterContinental Bali Resort on January 30–31, moved beyond ceremonial dialogue, emerging as a platform that connects governments, industry leaders, innovators, investors, scientists, and coastal communities to deliver tangible solutions for ocean sustainability. The two-day forum reinforced Indonesia’s ambition to lead global efforts in protecting marine ecosystems while reshaping coastal and marine tourism through sustainability-driven governance and innovation.

Opening the event, Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia Ni Luh Puspa Ermawati highlighted Bali’s strategic role as a global showcase for Indonesia’s tourism transformation. “Bali is no longer seen simply as a destination. It represents how Indonesia manages growth, responsibility, and environmental stewardship. What happens here shapes international confidence in our commitment to sustainable tourism,” she said.

She underlined that future tourism strategies must prioritize environmental carrying capacity and destination quality over visitor numbers. “Tourism can become a powerful incentive for conservation when managed wisely. If mismanaged, however, the damage to natural ecosystems may be irreversible,” Ni Luh Puspa warned. According to her, marine and coastal tourism remains Indonesia’s strongest asset, yet also the most vulnerable sector if sustainability principles are ignored. Increasing visitor pressure, coral reef degradation, waste management challenges, and limited ecological capacity are now being felt across key destinations including Bali, Nusa Penida, Labuan Bajo, Raja Ampat, Bunaken, Wakatobi, Alor, Derawan, and Banda Islands.

From Circular Economy Concepts to Scalable Solutions A central highlight of Bali Ocean Days 2026 was the Group 1 Exhibitors Presentations, where innovators showcased circular economy solutions already in operation and ready for expansion. Handprint introduced its Ocean Regeneration Credit Card, a fintech platform designed to embed ecosystem restoration directly into everyday business transactions. “We are redefining the role of finance—every transaction can actively contribute to ocean regeneration, not merely offset environmental harm,” a Handprint representative explained.

Parongpong RAW Lab presented a community-based model that transforms ghost nets and marine debris into new raw materials. “What is often treated as waste can become the backbone of a circular coastal economy,” the organization noted.

Ciliwung Clean Movement, exhibitor at 3rd BOD. Shira Indobalinews

Meanwhile, Shiva Industries unveiled industrial-scale organic waste processing technology capable of reducing waste volumes by up to 90 percent. “The organic waste crisis cannot be solved through small interventions alone. It requires large-scale, integrated solutions aligned with urban systems and tourism hubs,” the company stated. Completing the showcase, Noovoleum demonstrated its conversion of used cooking oil into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). “Decarbonizing aviation is impossible without viable alternative fuels, and waste-based SAF offers a realistic pathway forward,” a Noovoleum spokesperson said.

A Meeting Point for Island Nations and Global Policymakers Under the theme “Navigating Solutions for a Regenerative Ocean Future,” Bali Ocean Days 2026 brought together key Indonesian policymakers, including Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, and Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa Ermawati. International participation underscored the forum’s diplomatic significance, with attendance from Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu, Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Jelta Wong, and Seychelles Special Envoy Nico Barito—representatives of island nations facing acute climate and ocean-related risks.

Exhibitor MYCL at the 3rd BOD. Shira Indobalinews

Showcasing Action, Not Aspirations Chairman of Bali Ocean Days 2026, Yoke Darmawan, emphasized that the forum was intentionally curated to highlight solutions that have already moved beyond pilot stages. “Bali Ocean Days is not designed as a marketplace for ideas still on paper. We bring proven solutions into the same room as policymakers, industry leaders, and investors so their impact can be scaled through collaboration,” he said. He added that over the past two years, Bali Ocean Days has evolved into a regional knowledge hub, collaboration platform, and business-matching forum for ocean conservation, climate action, and circular economy initiatives aligned with SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Exhibitor, Wedoo at the 3rd BOD. Shira Indobalinews

Organized by the Sky Blue Sea Foundation (Yayasan Laut Langit Biru) in partnership with government ministries, corporations, NGOs, innovators, and academic institutions, Bali Ocean Days continues to position Indonesia—through Bali—as a catalyst for global ocean leadership grounded in real-world action.
