Bali’s New International Hospital Aims To Become Asia’s Best Medical Center

- The Bali Sun

The Mayor of Denpasar, I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, attended a series of ceremonies, which coincide with the holy Kadasa full moon in Bali, at temples located close to the new Bali International Hospital, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Sanur.

The Mayor used the ceremonies as an opportunity to set the intention for the medical facility to become the best in Asia.

The Mayor of Denpasar, I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara told reporters following the ceremonies “We hope that the presence of the temple in the hospital area can strengthen the spirit of service based on noble values, making Bali International Hospital the best medical center in Asia and even the world.”

He noted how the presence of the temples and adherence to the timing of cultural ceremonies is just another way that Balinese spirituality and culture will help create an environment of harmony and success around the healthcare facilities.

As a representative of the Bali International Hospital Management Team, Muhamad Sonny Irawan shared that the ceremonies were a symbol of asking for blessings in “sekala and niskala” which are the seen and unseen realms, for the prosperity and success of the hospital, its staff and patients.

He shared “We hope that through this [offering], the devotion space that we have prepared can provide blessings and safety for all parties.”

Bali International Hospital, located in the heart of Sanur, is set to become one of the most prominent medical tourism facilities in Asia. The private hospital will offer treatment to international medical tourists, as well as provide a facility for Indonesian patients who have previously sought treatment abroad.

All tourists traveling to Bali must ensure that they have fully comprehensive travel and health insurance. Generally speaking, travel insurance policies will cover medical emergencies abroad, those traveling to Bali as medical tourists are advised to contact their travel and medical insurance providers directly to understand what coverage their policy offers for elective medical treatments abroad.

The facility will feature highly specialized medical units focused on cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, hepatology, and orthopedics. This is all in addition to offering comprehensive medical check-up services and providing comprehensive women’s & children’s health clinics, including maternity care and travel medicine and vaccination services.

The hospital will offer 255 beds, 38 intensive care units, 8 operating rooms, and 4 catheterization labs. Bali International Hospital will also offer a full emergency medical department and will be home to Bali’s first mammogram service

The construction of the new Bali International Hospital has been completed and over the last few months, rigorous testing and operational development have been underway to ensure that the facility can run to a world-class standard. With the soft launch of the hospital set for mid-April 2025, the vision is finally coming to life. Patients can already book their health screening packages via the Bali International Hospital website.

It is expected that the medical screening services will be amongst the most highly sought-after services on offer at the hospital. There are two tiers of health screening packages available starting at IDR 3,400,000 and results are delivered within 24 hours.

It is now also possible to book the Pearl Screening package at the Bali International Hospital which is described as “a premium cancer screening package for women, focusing on on early detection of female-specific malignancies through advanced diagnostics and imaging.”

The screening device provides screening for breast, ovarian, and gastrointestinal cancer markers, and a full general health report along with the cancer screening results is delivered within 3 days, along with a specialist consultation.

Sanur is Bali’s original coastal vacation resort and remains hugely popular with holidaymakers around the world. Sanur is regarded as one of Bali’s most family-friendly resort areas due to its calm, shallow shorelines, family-friendly resorts, relaxed atmosphere, and ease of accessibility since it is one of Bali’s most walkable resorts.

Insurance company reveals most common, and most unusual, claims made by Aussies in Bali

By Sarah Keszler

The most common and unusual claims that holidaymakers are making in Bali, have been revealed.

Data from an Australian travel insurance company has revealed the most common, and most unusual, claims holidaymakers are making in Bali.

The beloved Indonesian holiday destination brings hoards of Australian tourists, and with them comes unexpected accidents and health issues.

Monkey bites, scooter bag-snatches, and reef cuts were among the most unusual claims submitted by Australians holidaying in Bali last year, according to Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI).

Bali’s growing popularity has also meant a significant increase in claims from Australians, with a 50 per cent year-over-year rise, accounting for 16 per cent of all SCTI claims received last year, the company said.

“The demand from Australians for Bali breaks over the summer has been on the rise since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Chief Customer Officer for SCTI, Jess Strange, said.

“Since the 2022/23 summer holidays, we’ve seen a 43 per cent increase in the number of Australian policies bought for trips to Bali.

“Interest in travelling to the beautiful island has continued to grow during the summer of 2024/25.”

In November last year, a 10-year-old girl from NSW was on Holidays in Bali with her family when she was bitten on her back by a monkey while visiting a monkey forest in Ubud.

The girl’s mother took her to hospital, where she received rabies treatment at a cost of $950.

Gastrointestinal illnesses, such as Bali Belly, has been rife with tourists with a 79 per cent spike seen in these claims in January, compared to the same time the last year.

In fact, Indonesia has made up 56 per cent of gastro cases at SCTI since November 2024, with costs for gastro related claims in Bali over the last 12 months ranging from $21 to as much as $30,000.

“At the more serious end, SCTI has supported Australians in Bali through 91 emergency cases across 2024,” Strange said.

“The most complex involved a young person experiencing seizures, who required an air ambulance home at a cost of around $232,000.”

Scooter and moped-related accidents are also common with travellers in Bali, according to the travel insurer. Credit: Klaus Vedfelt/Getty Images

Scooter and moped-related accidents are also common with travellers in Bali, with 21 claims received last year, and two resulting in hospital visits.

“It’s not just injuries that travellers should be concerned about as one unlucky traveller fell victim to a common Bali scam when they paused on their scooter to check directions on their phone, unaware that another scooter driver was about to make a swift bag-snatch,” a SCTI spokesperson said.

“In a flash, their bag was gone, leaving them shaken and upset.”

Beyond the physical injuries, SCTI said travellers often face stress, disruption, and logistical challenges following unexpected events.

The government’s Smart Traveller website urges Australian’s to exercise a high degree of caution while travelling in Indonesia.
