Tourist’s 2024 Spending Habits In Bali Revealed

Leading tourism researchers in Bali have been crunching all of the data that 2024 has had to offer.

Academics from the Unud Tourism Excellence Center have been surveying and analyzing tourism trends and traveler habits over the last 12 months, and the result makes for some seriously interesting reading.

International tourists visiting Bali’s Denpasar Regency, which includes beach resorts like Sanur, have increased their average spend by a whopping 11.3% versus 2023. With the average vacation spend sitting at IDR 1,988,477 per person in 2023, the average spend has shot up to IDR 2,242,540 per person.

At first glance, this may seem like quite a small average spend, at just USD 140 per person, lest we forget, however, that the average stay of an international tourist in Bali is 2 nights or 3 days.

While the holidaymakers who spent 7-14 days vacationing on the island make up a large portion of annual visitors, there are hundreds of thousands more who visit for a long weekend or equivalent.

Speaking to reporters researchers from the Ubud Faculty of Tourism, Nyoman Ariana, Made Sarjana, IGB Arya Yudiastine and Wayan Agung Panca, explained the findings in more details. They traced tourist spending habits based on nine criteria for tourists flying into Denpasar.

These expenditures included accommodation, food and drinks, local transportation, souvenir shopping, tour guides, tourism attraction fees, water sports and adventure activities, spa and wellness activities, and nightlife entertainment.

Ariana explained, “It was found that spa and wellness activities tend to be increasingly popular with tourists visiting Denpasar. So spa, wellness tourism activities are important to be developed seriously in the future.”

The data showed that in the year to November 2024, Denpasar Regency welcomed 1,772,975 tourists on overnight stays, this comprised of 448,425 international tourists and 1,324,550 domestic tourists. Data shows too that domestic tourists are increasing their average spend too, though by a smaller margin, just 3.5%.

When looking at the breakdown of demographics visiting Denpasar Regency’s tourist attractions, it is clear that the international tourists mostly hail from Australia, followed by the Netherlands and Germany, with an age range of 27-42 years. Domestic tourists tended to visit from Jakarta, East Java, and Central Java.

Domestic tourists tend to be from the Gen-Z generation and are known to set the travel trends that eventually filter out across traveler demographics, into the older domestic tourism markets, and into the international traveler community.

Ariana explained, “The difference found that foreign tourists seek information via Instagram and Facebook, while domestic tourists use Instagram and TikTok as sources of information. This can be taken into consideration by tourism attraction managers when promoting their tourism products.”

In June 2024, the Central Statistics Agency for Indonesia released a data set exploring the highest spending international tourists to the country’s leading destinations, such as Bali.

The figures highlighted that the top spending tourists in Indonesia in 2023 came from Austria, with the average Austrian tourist spending IDR 69.4 million during their trip to the archipelago, which is equivalent to USD 4,274.

Austrian tourists were closely followed by visitors from Switzerland, whose average spend was IDR 67.4 million, or USD 4,151, during their vacation in Indonesia. Figures for the highest spending tourists in 2024 will be released in 2025 by the Central Statistics Agency of Indonesia.

The Bali Provincial Government and the Bali Tourism Office have long been on a mission to get tourists to stay longer, spend more, and explore further across the province.

In 2025, we can expect to see more promotion of destinations in North Bali and West Bali as the government looks to distribute tourism across the province more evenly.

This will also help tourists spend their hard-earned vacation budgets in more impactful ways. These emerging tourism destinations offer all the high-quality experiences on offer in resorts in the south but typically offer great value for money and an overall lower cost of experience. It’s a win-win!

Tourists Should Book Entry Tickets In Advance For This Top Bali Attraction

Bali’s most famous attractions are going to be busy over the next few weeks, and there are a few ways in which travelers can help navigate some potential chaos.

One way to battle the crowds and avoid disappointment is to book entry tickets in advance, and thankfully, Bali is making it easier than ever to do just that.

The UNESCO World Heritage Jatiluwih Rice Terraces have just won a place in the World’s Best Tourism Villages, and rightfully so!

This stunning landscape and incredibly welcoming community deserve all the support and praise they are receiving. However, as the heritage landscape becomes even more widely known, it can only mean one thing: more people will be visiting!

As part of being able to be even nominated for the United Nations World Tourism Organization World’s Best Tourism Villages award, Jatiluwih Rice Terraces had to make a series of improvements and investments in both the tourist experience and the supporting infrastructure.

This included digitalizing many of the tourism services on offer at the site. This means that tourists can now book and pay for the tickets online and in advance.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces now also operates a cashless payment system onsite, so those who wish to buy tickets on arrival can only pay by debit or credit card or on ApplePay.

In anticipation of a huge increase in daily visitors to Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, managers are doing all they can to make sure everyone has a safe and comfortable visit. Tourists are advised to arrive at Jatiluwih Rice Terraces as early as possible this festive season for a number of reasons.

Arriving at opening time helps tourists max out on a day trip to this incredible heritage landscape; it also enables tourists to have a crowd-free view of the terraces, and on a practical level, having pre-booked tickets and arriving early helps tourists and their drivers get a good parking space; something that is an on-going issue at Jatiluwih Rice Terraces.

Ketut Purna, the General Manager of Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, told reporters that he and his teams have prepared fields outside of the Petali Temple compound in Jatiluwih Village as an alternative parking location.

Tourists should be aware that if they or their drivers are directed to park at Petali Temple, this is a 1km walk from the entrance to the Rice Terrace tourist route.

However, for those who would not be able to easily navigate the additional walk, support is in the process of being arranged, though not guaranteed.

Purna told reporters, “The land is already in front of Petali Temple. However, to utilize this land as a parking area, costs and a budget are needed for the arrangement. And we need buggies to transport visitors from there to here or vice versa. We need at least five buggies.”

He has submitted a request to the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism for more support in creating long-term solutions to the parking problem at the world-famous attraction.

The Acting Deputy for Destination and Infrastructure Development of the Ministry of Tourism, Hariyanto, told reporters, “One of the important points that we noted from the input from tourism management is the need for parking space. For a long-term solution, we will collaborate with the local government through the Special Allocation Fund (DAK).”

“June 2025 is the submission deadline. Therefore, we hope that the Tabanan Regency Government, through the Tourism Office, can formulate this proposal well.”

Tickets for the Jatilwuih Rice Terraces cost IDR 50,000 for international adults and IDR 40,000 for international children.

The Sunrise Experience at Jatiluwih costs IDR 150,000 and includes the general admission ticket, an exclusive sunrise view of the landscape, hot tea, and local homemade breakfast snacks.

Many people choose to spend a whole day visiting and exploring the Jatilwuih Rice Terraces, though for tourists wishing to tick off more Bali bucket list attractions, guided day trips are available to book online. These tours guide tourists to Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, Beratan Lake, The Handara Gate and the stunning Tanah Lot Temple all in one day, including hotel pick up and drop off.

Bali’s Kuta And Sanur Beaches Captivate Tourists, Turning Rainy Holidays Into Magic

The iconic beaches of Kuta and Sanur are drawing both domestic and international travelers this holiday season, each offering distinct experiences during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Kuta Beach is buzzing with energy, packed with visitors celebrating the season and contributing to a thriving local economy. In contrast, Sanur Beach is experiencing a quieter holiday period, with frequent afternoon rains deterring some tourists.

Despite the weather, Sanur still appeals to those seeking a serene escape. Known for its pristine shores and natural charm, the beach offers activities like sunrise gazing, canoeing, and diving, making it a favorite for nature enthusiasts.

Kuta Beach, on the other hand, thrives as a vibrant hub for holidaymakers, especially on Christmas Day, when visitor numbers peak. The lively atmosphere and popular venues, such as Rosso Vivo—a hotspot for international tourists—continue to make Kuta a go-to destination for relaxation and celebration.

As night fell, the festive atmosphere in Kuta came alive, with cafes hosting captivating shows, including thrilling fire-dancing performances. Adding to the holiday cheer, Santa Claus made a special appearance, delighting children by handing out gifts.

In Canggu, a favorite spot for tourists, Canggu Beach has returned to its usual pristine state following heavy rains and the accumulation of seasonal debris.

Sanur Beach, another well-loved destination in Bali, has experienced a drop in visitor numbers this holiday season, largely due to the persistent rainy weather.

Visitors to Sanur Beach can still soak in its natural charm by enjoying activities like watching breathtaking sunrises, strolling along its pristine sandy shores, or exploring the vibrant underwater world through scuba diving, snorkeling, and canoeing. However, the unpredictable weather remains a significant factor affecting the flow of tourists and the ease of engaging in these activities.

Bali’s Best Travel Hacks Save Time And Money For First Time Visitors

Published Bali Sun: December 26, 2024

If you are traveling to Bali for the first time in 2025 or just getting ready to fly to the island to celebrate the new year, you are in for a treat!

Bali is one of the world’s leading travel destinations and, in our opinion, one of the most welcoming.

If you’re a first-time traveler to Bali, there are a few hints, tricks, and travel hacks that we think everyone should know.

We don’t gatekeep here, friends; here are our top travel hacks to save you time and money on your first…or next…trip to Bali.

eVisa on Arrival & Bali Tourism Tax Levy

Arranging your eVisa on Arrival might not save you money, but wow, will it save you time? Obtaining an Indonesian eVisa on Arrival is super simple and available to almost all passport holders. The online visa can be applied for by passport holders from over 90 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the US, the UK, China, India, and many more. The eVisa on Arrival is also a great option if you’re traveling as a couple, as a family, or as a group since it can be applied for groups of up to five travelers simultaneously.

This saves you so much time upon Arrival at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. Of course, you can still apply for the visa upon arrival or upon arrival, should you wish, but the eVisa upon arrival does come with a few extra benefits.

Not only do you have clearance to visit Indonesia prior to Arrival, but you also skip the visa payment queue and much of the immigration queue on Arrival and departure from Bali. The eVisa on Arrival allows tourists to use the newly installed autogates, which reduces the immigration check process to a simple passport scan and just a few seconds of waiting.

The eVisa on Arrival costs IDR 500,000 and is valid for a stay of up to 30 days; the permit is valid for a maximum period of 90 days from the date of issue. It can be extended online for a further 30 days and is a single entry.

Get An eSIM or SIM Card On Arrival

Staying connected while on vacation is more important than ever, not to mention that so many day trips, tours, and experiences in Bali now directly or indirectly require us to use our phones. From ApplePay to GoogleMaps, translation apps, and online table reservation booking systems, it’s super important to be able to be online 24/7.

While WiFi is widely available, don’t we all cringe a little having to ask for the WiFi password the moment we arrive somewhere new? Installing an eSIM prior to arriving in Bali is affordable and super easy to implement. Providers like Airlo offer great value and keep travelers connected from the moment they switch off airplane mode when they touch down on the runway.

Local providers like Telkomsel even have a service that allows tourists to pre-book their tourist SIM card and can simply head over to the Telkomsel storefront in the arrivals hall of Bali Airport, where staff will install and connect your new SIM card for no extra charge.

Book Trips In Advance & Directly

This is a big travel hack for Bali; book day trips and tours in advance and directly to save both time and money. Trips like ATV Tours and cultural immersion temple trips with waterfall visits often get booked out in advance, or if you book through a travel agent, you will have commissions and extra fees all added in.

Many hotels, resorts, and local providers offer exclusive and bespoke tours to areas off the beaten path, which are certainly worth exploring. For those bucket list Bali day trips and visits to top attractions, booking online, direct, and in advance saves both time and money.

Get Your Laundry Done Before You Leave!

Honestly, this may feel like such an unimportant or insignificant travel hack, but you’d be amazed at how many people have never even considered it! What is the worst part of a vacation? It’s the bundles of laundry to do on your return home, right?!

In Bali, local laundry services are still big business, and there are thousands of small-scale, locally owned and operated laundry services that will wash, dry, and iron your whole suitcase’s worth of clothing for you for just a few dollars.

Simply take all of your vacation clothing out the morning before you’re due to depart from Bali, leaving aside your travel day outfit, and take your bundle over to a laundry service nearby.

Ask for a 6 or 8-hour turnaround, and head back in the evening to pick it up. Pop it in your luggage, and bingo…stress gone for just a few dollars! You can thank us later!
