Bali Governor Says Hotel Occupancy Surging, Denies Mass Layoffs in Tourism Sector Antara

Denpasar. Bali Governor I Wayan Koster has dismissed rumors of widespread layoffs in the island’s tourism industry, claiming that the sector is currently experiencing a surge in hotel occupancy rates amid strong domestic and international demand.

“Hotels are full. The Meru Sanur is at 96 percent occupancy, hotels in Nusa Dua are over 90 percent, in Kuta around 80 percent, and even in Buleleng, occupancy has reached 70 percent,” Koster said in Denpasar on Sunday. “There are layoffs, but not in the tourism sector.”

The governor stressed that Bali’s tourism sector has continued to recover strongly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the island welcomed 6.4 million international tourists and 9.5 million domestic visitors.

According to provincial government data, international arrivals in the first half of 2025 rose by 10 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

Koster noted that domestic tourism has also surged, especially in June, driven by the school holiday season.

“Even I couldn’t find a flight from Jakarta to Bali. I had to call Garuda Indonesia’s CEO just to secure a ticket. Bali is packed with visitors,” he said.

Koster acknowledged that layoffs did occur recently at a soft drink factory in Badung Regency, but said this was due to declining demand for the product, not related to the tourism industry.

“If this issue of layoffs isn’t clarified, it could damage the reputation of Bali’s tourism sector,” he warned.

Government data shows that Bali’s economy grew by 5.48 percent, outpacing the national average, with unemployment at just 1.79 percent and a poverty rate of 3.8 percent.

Koster also said the provincial government will crack down on tourism businesses that engage in tax evasion schemes, including property owners who illegally rent out houses or villas without paying hotel and restaurant taxes.

Bali Moves Closer To Launching Incredible Multi-Stop Tour Package

The Bali Sun

Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism is taking major steps forward toward launching the long-anticipated 3Bs Tour.

The tour package will connect North Bali, West Bali, and Banyuwangi in East Java and is a project initiated by the previous Minister of Tourism, Sandiaga Uno.

Speaking at a press conference in Buleleng Regency, West Bali, Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh Puspa told reporters that the tour package is nearing launch.

One of the key missions of the 3Bs Tour is to develop high-quality tourism in North Bali, West Bali, and East Java. To achieve this, intensive efforts are necessary to strengthen amenities and improve accessibility.

North Bali and West Bali are the two least-visited and least-developed regions of the province in terms of tourism. As tourism in the central south of the island continues to intensify, leaders are on a mission to help grow sustainable and culturally respected tourism in other areas of the province.

While talk of the 3Bs Tour has been in the headlines for many months, details about the package have been limited.

As reporters were given access to a stakeholder meeting held by Minister Ni Luh Puspa, it was confirmed that specific details regarding the tour package itinerary are still being decided upon. Puspa told the meeting, “Hopefully in this meeting, we can map out what the destinations are for Banyuwangi, what for Jember, and what for Buleleng. We prioritize that and then we will intensify promotion.”

The Minister confirmed that the initial target market for the tour packages is tourists from Seoul and Beijing; however, the package will also be available to international and domestic tourists from around the world and across Indonesia.

Minister Pupsa also discussed with reporters how transportation infrastructure will be developed in North Bali and West Bali to support the 3Bs Tour package and promote more tourist activities in the areas.

One of the central pillars of the itinerary is that tourists will travel between the three main destinations by boat, hopping from Lovina in North Bali to Gilimanuk or Pemuteran, located to the west of the province, and then onwards to Banyuwangi in East Java.

She told the media that the Ministry of Tourism is on hand to provide support for investing in upgrading transportation facilities to help tourists travel seamlessly throughout the three regions.

She noted, “We will be ready to provide transportation, namely in the form of a speedboat. But what is still homework is how to find a pier to receive [tourists] at Lovina Beach.”

The Minister noted that she is open to receiving support from the central government to build a new pier at Lovina Beach or seek private investment as part of a public-private partnership. She shared, “I think it is possible that we can bring investors, for example, to build a pier. These are perhaps the options that can be discussed.”

During her visit to the area, Minister Pupsa also launched the Clean Tourism Movement in Lovina Beach.

The Clean Tourism Movement is a nationwide initiative that aims to address waste management at Indonesia’s top tourism destinations.

The campaign encourages local communities to play an active role in tourism development and environmental conservation.

Minister Puspa told reporters, “This is the point where we choose to continue to encourage tourists to come to North Bali.”

“We hope that with this activation, we can continue to echo the name of Buleleng in the name of Lovina as a clean and quality tourism destination.”

North Bali is starting to attract the attention of an increasing number of international tourists. Not only are famous resorts like Lovina Beach attracting a new wave of tourists, but destinations like the jungles of Munduk are also starting to establish themselves as serious tourist destinations in Bali, worthy of a place on the bucket list.
